Level I Training Series
Building Operator Certification (BOC) training includes nearly 74 hours of classroom and project work (7.4 CEUs) in building systems operation and maintenance. Each course in the series is completed in a one day training session, except BOC 1001 Energy Efficient Operation of Building HVAC Systems, which is a two day course. To graduate from the series, participants must pass a test at the end of each training day and complete five assigned projects. Unless otherwise noted, training begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends by 4:00 p.m. Early registration is encouraged.
Tuition: $1,350. The registration fee of $1,350 covers all class materials, books, and a certificate upon completion of the training series.

* Denotes that the class will be held online. This series will offer a hybrid model, which will allow for students to attend three of the classes from the comfort of their office or home. These classes will be offered online, with live video conferencing software that will allow for students and instructors to interact just as they would in the classroom. The motivation behind this model is to make the program accessible for those who may have difficulty getting the necessary time approved off or for those who are further away from the training location in Hazard, Kentucky.
Important: Graduates of this training series will earn a training certificate of completion. In order to earn the Certified Building Operator credential, graduates will need to register for a third-party exam. Registration for this exam will be available throughout the duration of the training series and the exam will be scheduled individually once the training series is completed.
EPA Energy Star Portfolio Manager Training
The Louisville Energy Alliance, in partnership with Louisville Metro Government’s Office of Sustainability, invite you to attend a free ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager training.
The training will consist of a one-hour webinar hosted by an ENERGY STAR professional followed by on-site technical assistance with entering data into the software. Portfolio Manager is a free, online software that enables building owners and managers to track and evaluate a facility’s energy and water consumption over time. Buildings that perform in the top 25% of their peers, receiving a minimum score of 75/100, are eligible to receive the ENERGY STAR certification.
In this three-part series, participants will learn everything from the basics of entering building and energy data into the software to the more advanced functions of setting goals and targets for their energy improvements. Technical experts will be on-site to assist with questions after each of the webinars.
Attendees will learn how to:
- Operate Portfolio Manager
- Set up a new property
- Set up water and energy meters
- Log energy and water use data
- Create custom reports from the data

After entering data into Portfolio Manager, building owners and managers will become eligible to participate in the Office of Sustainability’s Free ENERGY STAR Certification Program, which allows building owners to receive free verification services from a licensed architect or engineer, building managers and owners must first enter their data into Portfolio Manager.
